From Use, to Disuse, to NEW Use
In the spring of 2026 the Winchester Historical Society initiated a community process to:
- Restore the National Register listed historic exterior of the Carriage House
- Renovate and repurpose the interior for use as a community resource
- Fundraise from private donors and identify grant funding
- Establish a sustainable operating model built on the successful restoration and operation of the Sanborn main house (20+ years)
1907: Sanborn Main House and Carriage House Built 1969: Town Purchases Estate and Creates Ambrose School 2005: Ambrose Rebuilt and Sanborn Carriage House Vacated 2006: Sanborn Main House leased to Winchester Historical Society 2025: Schools file for permit to demolish 2026: Demo funds voted down
